While researching things to see and do in Dublin, I often came across this sentence: Dublin- you either love it or hate it. On my first trip to Ireland, the capital was completely ignored. The more we looked into where we wanted to travel to, the more Dublin became interesting. We also heard from others who had been, that it was not to be missed. We booked a few nights at the beginning and end of the trip. We were not disappointed. Dublin is vibrant and there is plenty more to see and do than just going to the Guinness Storehouse and drinking a pint or two or three. There is music on every street corner, amazing museums and delicious restaurants.
We booked a 2.5 hour walking tour of the city for the first morning we were there and learned so much about the history of the city and of Ireland. One of the first questions I asked, was how to pronounce Baile Átha Cliath, Dublin in Gaelic. It’s not what you expect, but I that I know how to say it, it’s not the tongue twister I thought it was!
I loved the walk along the River Liffey towards the harbor, the many bridges and various interesting buildings. One of my highlights was the Samuel Beckett bridge, designed by Santiago Calatrava. I’ve seen many of his works and this one did not disappoint. The bridge evokes the image of a harp on its side, Ireland’s national symbol.
Until I saw your photos of Ireland, I had no interest in visiting there. But the sights, the countryside, and the food look amazing!
I’ve watched so many movies and read so many books set in Dublin, it lives large in my head. I love your photos of it–it makes it so very real, and very much a place I want to visit!
If you ever get a chance to go, you should! It’s a great city to explore.
